day 17: how I styled my bar cart: Before and After

A few weeks back I saw this bar cart in Target and I snapped this photo so I could walk around with it and decide whether or not I really ‘needed’ it. Do you do this too?

(BEFORE photo)

Well, by the time I got to the front of the store I’d already decided. Yes. I need that cart!

So back I went down the aisle and bought this cute cart home, only later finding out it was from the new Wit and Delight line now at Target. I’ve been a follower of theirs for a long time and knew there was a reason I thought it looked so cool.

So where’s it going?

Well… as some of you already know, right now I’m participating in a Gallery Wall Design Project organized by two incredible designers, Cindy from Rough Luxe and Mary Ann from Classic Casual Home.  Since my wall happens to be in the dining room, I’m sprucing up the whole space and when I saw this bar cart I knew it belonged beneath my future gallery wall.

If you Google how to style a bar cart you’ll find lots of photos and blog posts on the subject, but I don’t hear many people talking about styling a practical bar cart.

In other words, the first question you should ask yourself when setting up your own cart is a basic one. What do we really drink?

Really. Not what looks trendy and cool in the design world, but what kinds of liquor do you actually drink in real life?

Our answer is wine and good imported beer. Pretty much that’s it. Oh, and the hubby likes his favorite Scotch.

So I decided to keep our bar cart pretty simple. I found these following items at the thrift store:

two silver trays ($2.99 and $3.99)

A quirky gold pineapple candle holder ($1.99)

A  silver slightly bent candy dish  ($2.99)

And I bought this little wine rack from The Container Store that I attached to the bottom of the upper shelf with a few screws.

Voila!  Accessible glasses.

Napkins from TJ Maxx and fresh flowers.

I got lucky with those trays, they looked great once they were washed.

After

This is the only shot I can show you without spoiling my gallery wall question.

Did I use the color prints or the black and white ones on my wall?

What do you think?

Don’t forget Monday is the big reveal for the gallery wall project and you’ll get to see how everyone’s walls turned out.

But before I go, here’s a sneak peek of the Fall tablescape I just finished

and you can see more of this table on gallery wall “Reveal” day….!

In the meantime,

I hope you’re enjoying the 17th day of October.

I purchased a similar cart at Target last year and styled it simply as well. Those laden with excessive bottles are so not us and who wants to dust them all? Can't wait to see the gallery wall. I would love to come up with one for our front staircase. Loving the sneak peek of the table setting! I think we would get along infamously if you lived closer!!

Great finds Leslie! I think the black and white prints would look so cool against your wall colour ~ and because you are a risk taker and think outside the box ~ I am going to guess that you used the coloured photos. xo

I love how you styled this, Leslie...simple and elegant! I am guessing you used the color prints (just from the floral arrangement you used)...

Nicely done Leslie and I like your thrift shop finds! I almost bought a bar cart a couple weeks ago but decided to wait until we move in the house. They are so versatile and I'm thinking about putting one upstairs in my bathroom for storage. Your autumn touches look so pretty. Unfortunately I can't do any decorating yet :( and it's killing me..

I bought the bar cart at Target too.. last week! Funny is that I had it last year and it was too dark so I returned it. I saw the art this year has lighter wood and it came home again! It really is so cute and mine had a tiny scratch so I got 30% off... score! now we are twinzies :)

Leslie,
I love the bar cart and your way of styling it. Those trays were a great find. I love treasures like that...all the more because they were such a great find.
I'm looking forward to the wall gallery reveal by all of you talented designers.
Have a fun weekend.

Looks beautiful! I saw the cart at Target and really coveted it. I have a wine cabinet and a little bar decor on top so the Target cart had to stay there.

I'm hoping you used the color photos but perhaps the black & white since the flowers are so colorful. The flowers are truly beautiful! I'll look forward to seeing your reveal on Monday.

Love that cart Leslie.I've been looking for a bar cart for about 3 years now. I did find a cart that I'm going to make over, but I've only had it for a year and a half so it's not quite time to get it finished! I'm anxious to see the gallery wall. I'm also curious about how you all will photograph your walls. I try hard to photograph mine, but the pictures have so much glare from the glass. I've heard a suggestion to take the glass out of the pictures, but Hah! are you kidding me. Most of mine are professionally framed and sealed shut, and I am NOT going to mess with that!
