Hello friends. Happy April to you!
In my last post I mentioned that I'm finally tackling our Master Bedroom--the one room in the house that is completely untouched since we moved in here. I know. Isn't it odd that the room we spend so much time in, is the very room that gets put on the backburner?
But I finally got motivated when my Dad came in town and taught me how to use my miter saw and since then I've got my creative juices going, trying to finalize my plans for this room.
The first step in my master re-do was to figure out the paint color ---which is really about the ambiance of the entire room. For a long time, this picture has been my inspirational photo for our master bedroom.
Or so I thought.
If you've been to my Pinterest bedroom board you can see how varied my taste is, but the big question for me when deciding on paint shades is how they make me feel--not how they look on a wall. For instance, I really love the trendy grey paint colors I'm seeing everywhere in blogland. I especially loved this bold, dark shade when I painted my dining room.
(Although it's already been changed)
But here's the problem. Our master bedroom faces north and we only have one window which means there isn't a whole lot of natural light in there.
And even though I love the idea of a grey master bedroom--
in either a deep shade ---
or a soft, warm shade...
when I actually tried some grey colors on our walls and lived with them for a while they felt ...well, sort of cold to me. I even tried Farrell and Ball's Cornforth White which is a subtle---barely there--kinda grey--and without any blue undertones at all and I saw blue.
It's not that I don't like blue-greys, in fact I picked this cool grey for our bathroom remodel here.
I just didn't want it for our light-challenged master.
When selecting paint colors--especially white shades--it's crucial to consider the amount of natural light in your room especially in a north facing view--like ours-- which can even make white paint shades look dull.
If you have a room without a lot of natural light I found THIS post helpful.
And if you're trying to pick a grey paint for a north facing room like mine I found THIS post helpful.
The other point I had to consider was my tendency to keep coming back to creamy white hues when pinning inspiration photos. Like this one featured at Thistlewood Farm.
and I was also drawn to plank walls...
and fabric upholstered headboards.
Yep.
I guess it's time to trade our metal headboard for something more sophisticated and comfy.
I just have to decide if the new headboard I plan on making should be tufted like this one...
or simple, with straight lines like this one.
Next time I'll share photos of my newly painted bedroom in the Farrell and Ball paint shade I chose and tell you about the headboard I decided to make.
Thank you so much for following along on my progress.
I hope you have a great weekend. Right now I'm reading the third book in the Game of Thrones series. My son got me hooked but I haven't watched one show and have no real desire yet. I'm too engrossed in the books....anyone else reading something juicy-good right now?

Happy April to you! I'm eager to see your master redo. Love the inspiration photos. I'm following along and thinking I want to redo some rooms in our home. It's time to paint for sure! Thanks for inspiring me, Leslie.
Happy April! Great inspiration pics. Cannot wait to see your master bedroom re-do. With your impeccable taste, I'm sure it will be gorgeous. Enjoy your weekend!
can't wait to see what color you pick. as far as books...i'm knee deep in brene brown's rising strong. its kicking my arse and making me whole at the same time.
I cannot wait to see what you come up with for your bedroom redo! I love all of your inspiration photos, as well as your Pinterest page! So many beautiful photos.
I hope that you have a great weekend Leslie!
Hi Leslie! Can't wait to see what magic you spin in your bedroom. An upholstered headboard sounds lovely, I personally love the tufted, but if you do it on your own, be prepared for the issues tufting can throw at you. One of my friends made her own upholstered headboards, picked a lovely navy and white for her roo, which she loved. About a year later she was tired of the look, but now faced what to do with it, how could she change it? She made the headboard so that it was attached to the wall. She could have made a slipcover to change it for the seasons but it wasn't free standing. Yup, she was not happy. Whatever you choose I know you and your tools will come up with something fabulous! xo Patty/NS
Happy April to you! Yikes, how can it be April already?!
I love your inspiration images for your bedroom and can't wait to see what you decide on paint color and headboard.
My so got me hooked on the Game of Thrones books. I'm watching the series as well. The books use a different time line but the books also helped me figure out some of the tv series. It's probably not for everyone but I am enjoying it.
Enjoy your weekend, it's so pretty right now in SoCal.

Your inspiration photos are all lovely, and I know your master bedroom will look like a million bucks when you're finished, Leslie! I painted our master bedroom gray, but I wish it was more of a cool gray. It's got lots of yellow in it, and someday if I find myself with time on my hands I may repaint it, but.......
I love upholstered headboards and I can't wait to see what you come up with! The sky's the limit now that you're armed with new power tools!
Your comments aren't going to my gmail, so thanks for stopping by! I'm still laughing at the idea of a tutorial of me stenciling my wall in my jammies. hehe It was not a pretty sight! Have a great week, Leslie!
I will be watching and reading with interest to see what you decide. I am facing a similar dilemma myself, hopefully, later this year, and I'm really influenced by the "feeling" a paint color gives to a room.
Thanks,
Paula
I just love your style, Gwen. These images are beautiful! Choosing the right paint color can be so darn tricky. It sounds like you are putting lots of thought and research into finding just the right shade. No doubt it will be perfect when you finish. You are so lucky to have your mom and dad able to help with your projects. I miss my dad who was such a handy guy (master of the miter saw too!). Must have been the dentist in him very good with his hands. Thanks for stopping by SMC. We did have a lovely, relaxing trip.
By the way, I agree with you about the movie Carol. It did have an uncomfortable vibe. Not uncommon for a male/female pursuit but a different twist with these characters.
Happy Sunday, lovely lady!

i hear you about selecting the right color in light-impaired rooms. your inspiration photos are inspiring and suggest feminine farmhouse to me, which is always so romantic in a bedroom. i used benjamin moore "white" in almost every room here including the master with is northern exposure. i gave the furniture in there a fresh coat of paint: benjamin moore "revere pewter" which is actually more of a linen color with the northern exposure. i was ready for all this bright gallery white after living for years with so much greige, which can be dreary in some seasons here. i am reading a book about mary magdalene which is kind of blowing my mind--i love her!
I love all the different grays I am seeing. Your rooms are looking so sophisticated and I can't wait to see what you do.
When my daughter came to live in Ventura (far too briefly) she made herself a navy suede headboard. It turned out great, but she left it with us when she moved because she was switching to a queen size bed. I have the navy headboard in our guest room and I like the look.
BTW -we spent Easter weekend in Sacramento. Kendra lives in Midtown on N so Steve and I walked to the Fab Forties on Easter morning and walked through McKinley Park. We loved that the neighborhoods are all tree lines and the trees meet in the center to form a canopy over the streets.
It's so fun watching this journey, Leslie! I can't wait to see what you do...it's always inspiring and great looking!
So much gorgeous inspiration, Gwen! I can't wait to see yours - know it will be beautiful!
So many choices, Leslie...Pinterest makes it easy but also gives us so many options that our heads spin. I really like what you've shared, I think we have very similar taste. I'm excited to see how the progress goes!
