Black to White: a kitchen update

DSC_1394cpy2

This is a BEFORE photo of my kitchen.

Although I like having touches of black in my white kitchen, these dark chairs and table started to feel too dark. Especially since I don’t get a lot of natural light in here after the morning hours.

Funny when I look at this photo, I still like this look. And I might have kept them black except for my brown sectional that’s next to this kitchen. The combination of my dark chocolate sectional which I have a love/hate relationship with

( love how comfy it is, sick-of-the-color)

and this black table and chairs created a heaviness in this space. Do you do this kind of balancing act with color too? It felt like something needed to change.

You can see more of my before kitchen HERE.

Anyway, since I can’t afford a new couch I decided to focus on what I could change so I painted the furniture. You can see how I sanded, dismantled the chairs and used a chalk paint recipe HERE.

I won’t deny it, painting chairs are a lot of work (thanks Dad for your help).

After

But now that it’s done, I’m SO happy with it. I’m just loving all the white.

What do you think? I took this picture in the morning.

Well that’s it for now. I’ll be back with photos of the whole kitchen

(hopefully with better lighting)

when I’m finished with my kitchen island chalk art. Now that the wedding’s over I finally have time to finish it! Although I still think the biggest transformation has been the white-chalk painted fireplace in this room, it changed the entire feeling in here. Amazing what paint can do.

In the meantime…this weekend is the annual Mother-Son dance at Michael’s school and it’s my Mom’s birthday on Sunday so I’ll be doing a little brunch. So I’m off to check out recipes….

I sure hope you have a wonderful weekend!

xoxo

nothing makes me happier than painting something white, so i highly approve and think it truly refreshes the whole room and ties in with the family room more effectively.

the dance sounds great!

I definitely love the new look with the white table and chairs. The black's a great look, but it really lightens things up and changes the dynamic with the brown sofa. great decision!

Amazing how such a simple change really brightened up the space! LOVE the white. Your kitchen is gorgeous, btw! I'm a wee bit envious :)

I know what you mean when you say you like the dark stools. That room is great. But, I love the white stools. The nice thing about paint is you can repaint them if you grow tired of the white.

Your fireplace really does look amazing, and the white chairs really lighten things up as well. I'm doing the same thing, by the way. I just love how white walls and furniture make everything look so crisp and clean. And your flowers are gorgeous!

We all need a little black in the kitchen and I think that the pot rack holds it together.
The white chairs make it all pop!!
Looking good!!

Stunning change Leslie!! I love it. I have the same issue with limited natural light in our kitchen and that is what really drove me to go with as much white as possible. It really does brighten up the space and the before and after shots really show that. Your kitchen is so gorgeous.

That was a tough decision; the black chairs were so sophisticated. I have to say, though that I like how the white really freshens up your kitchen! It's bright and airy and looks like a place you want to be in...they contrast so much better with the sofa, too:) Great choice!
