On Saturday I made these two tropical centerpieces for my next door neighbors.
Jeff and Maria were celebrating the life of their Dad –and father-in-law--who had recently passed away at the age of ninety two. Because he was such a fun-loving guy who lived in Hawaiian shirts, shorts and flip-flops they asked their guests to come dressed in tropical attire and they had a live band, lots of food and a microphone set up for guests to share their memories of Leonard.
It was so lovely.
Because it was being hosted at their home I decided to bring flowers they could use on their yellow tablecloths. I’d seen pineapples used as vases before and I thought it would go perfectly with their theme.
And I took some pictures to show you how I did it.
For these centerpieces I headed over to our local grocery store and bought :
- one big bouquet filled with orange and yellow gerbera daisies
- white chrysanthemums
- yellow snapdragons
- and Queen Annie’s Lace,
- one bouquet of white roses
- 4 fresh limes (stuck on wood skewers)
- misc filler flowers
Whenever I’m doing more than one arrangement for an event I like to do them concurrently so even though they’re different, the composition is similar.
After your flowers are arranged in your pineapple “vase” you can hide the rim of the cup by tucking moss along the edges. I think the moss looks so vibrant next to the colors of the fresh pineapple don’t you think?
I sure hope you enjoyed this post today.
Happy Monday my friends!

This sounds like a perfect way to celebrate his life...and your flowers are perfect, too!
these are so pretty, what a fun idea to use the pineapples as a vase. love the flowers you picked!
What a great idea to use a pineapple as the base...it looks so pretty!
I think your centerpieces were the perfect gift to celebrate a colorful life! You make cutting the pineapple look so easy, and you have a knack for flower arranging, too. I'm all thumbs when it comes to putting centerpieces together, but maybe if I followed your directions I'd have better luck. They're so colorful and fun!
Thanks for visiting, Leslie. For some reason, many of my comments aren't showing up on my email, so I can't respond that way. I'm not tech savvy, so I have no idea how to fix it. I wish you could send me some California sunshine!! It's going to drop down into the 40's tonight. It feels more like winter than fall!
Clever idea and a very thoughtful gift.
Oh, my goodness! Your flower arrangements are absolutely beautiful. I pinned the idea, but I don't know if mine would ever be as pretty as yours.
And, what a wonderful way to celebrate a life. Just last night we had friends over and the conversation came around to funerals. A neighbor just lost his father and our next door neighbor was just put into an assisted living home. We were talking about how much better a celebration would be and I love the idea of everyone coming in Hawaiian shirts and flip flops.
Leslie,
This is such a great idea. You did such a pretty job with the flowers and I love the lime on a skewer tucked in...it's such a fun idea for a summer event. I'll be pinning this idea!
I'm sorry for the loss of your neighbor, but I'll bet he was enjoying the party from above.
xo.

You are just so darn clever, Leslie. These centerpieces are perfect for this event. How special that you could contribute such a lovely gift. It sounds like you are truly settling into your new neighborhood--how wonderful to hear after all the transitions you have had to make. I may just have to try this idea for Labor Day weekend. My sister and beau are coming up from Newport Beach for the weekend. She's the owner of Broadway Botanicals--succulent and blooms heaven. Love this post my dear friend.
xx, Heather
Just reading this one now Leslie and I love the bouquets. Sounds perfect for the event and what fun for a sad time ~ 91 is a full life indeed. xo
