I recently found an old painted tray at the thrift store and I thought these warm colors would look pretty against some white beadboard.
The problem was its size. The biggest plate hanger typically fits plates between 10 and 14 inches. But even after a lot of stretching and bending it was obvious that this tray wasn’t going to fit. It actually measures 12 inches wide and 24 inches long.
I didn’t want to put a nail through it.
And although I thought about using Velcro strips, since it was going over the stove I decided against it.
Instead, I went to the hardware store where I found the largest springs they carried, and I switched them out.
Here’s the old spring next to the bigger replacement springs already in.
And it worked.
You might remember what this part of the kitchen looked like only a few weeks ago.
Before
AFTER
Boy, I’m so glad we removed those top cabinet doors.
I painted the beadboard with BM’s Simply White but I still have a few more things to do in here before I share updated photos.
Although I’m so happy I got that tray up.
So tell me. How do you hang your large trays?

Lovely, looking forward to the full reveal. fondly ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteyou're one smart cookie. I don't think I would have thought of the bigger springs. I'm thinking our kitchens look like twins! LOVE the tray AND the beadboard!
ReplyDeletelove it... but I must have missed a few posts.. I need to go back and read.

That looks amazing! Love the beadboard backsplash and the tray hanging there. We hung a big silver tray above our stove. We have a stone backsplash and hubby didn't want to drill holes in it. We strung fishing line which is almost invisible through the handles. It's hanging from cup hooks that are in the cabinets above. It sounds weird but it worked great. You can see it here:

Did I miss a kitchen post?? Your kitchen is looking real good love the beadboard and love that pretty tole tray! I hung one of mine using the 3M velcro strips...love them because they don't damage the wall or the tray!
ReplyDeleteI actually have a large green floral tray that I'd like to hang, but could never quite figure out how to do it. Now you've solved my problem! ... I love your tray and the beadboard. You're making good progress!
ReplyDeleteYou're really making progress! Looks wonderful, especially with the tray. Can't wait to see it finished!

Leslie,
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous 'before' and after. You're kitchen/stove area looks so fresh and new. The tray is perfect.
I've never hung a large platter but in my dream file there are numerous pictures of large blue and white platters that I would love to own, then hang, someday.
:-)
I'm really impressed with your posts coming in like clockwork every day! I aspire to that accomplishment when I grow up.

Beautiful tray and great ingenuity! Your kitchen is looking good. :-) I just bought some of these invisible plate hangers in several sizes but haven't tried them yet: http://swanpicturehangers.com/platehanger.shtml
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty! Amazing that you are able to visualize something like that. A great post, thanks for sharing! - Nancy
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, Leslie! I love how that turned out...we used Simply White in our kitchen, too. I haven't had my tole trays out for awhile...yours looks SO beautiful, it makes me remember why I love them so. They really need to be out somewhere!
ReplyDeleteLeslie, you are so cool! I love these tips and gawd if I didn't have this writing crown-of-thorns on my head I'd be with you in the hardware shop. I still have to repaint my boys' huge room for the writing retreat here next spring! The only card I can pull is that at least I have been productive with words..Argh! I'm never on top of anything!! Xxcat
ReplyDeleteLook at you!! You've already got your kitchen looking like a million bucks and you just moved in, Leslie!
ReplyDeleteNow you thought of a clever solution for hanging your tray (which I love!). I had a wall of large tole trays in our previous house, and here's how I made those small plate hangers work: I put on my dish washing gloves and stretched the wire to the max. hehe I was too lazy to go the hardware store.
I can't wait to see more!

for what it's worth...I found this post almost 5 years later and I love the suggestions for hanging large trays/plates. Thanks!!
