Good luck to all the college freshmen and their parents who are in the midst of packing and heading off to their new schools at this very moment. As you probably know decorating a dorm is a unique experience. The space is tiny, the room-mate is a question mark, the budget is tight and the emotions are right on the surface. (Kleenex anyone?)
This post is for all those Moms and college kids who might need some ideas. (Thanks Kim for this suggestion). I hope these links are helpful.

And if you want to see how I transformed this
drab looking thrift store table…
into this masculine looking college desk…
don’t forget to check back for the whole post.
Right now I’m off to buy a few of those 12 essential items.
In the meantime I’m sending special hugs to Marcy, Michele, Kim G. and Mare…my fellow freshmen college Moms. Hang in there girls… we’re almost there!

Great tips, especially having a bin for those dirty dishes! And send your kids off to school with some framed family pictures...even though they may hide them in a drawer, they will miss you and be happy to have a peek now and then!
XO,
Jane
A bittersweet time, that's for sure! It's fun to decorate for them...if they allow it. :) The desk is gorgeous, great job!

Great inspiration post...and the desk turned out wonderfully!
Leslie, great inspiration! Love th table that you did over too! Can't believe my son will be graduating in December, time sure does fly by!
The Essentisl List is important! Most college dorm rooms are really small and also shared.. do ( in my experience;) the kids collaborate on colors and keep things simple. Visiting my son, I'd notice many kids left their clothes in their suitcase! Exciting time!
I came to College from across the ocean...with 2 suitcases, holding mainly clothes for all seasons (as I would not return home to get the winter clothes). I had postcards and letters from people back home that I would hang on the wall as they wold come in. Making the most of what I had, right? The coffe table looks great btw
Thank you so much for this post. I need to get Andrew an air freshener. Boys can be a little stinky. A plant might freshen things up a bit too. He better not stick the family photo in a drawer. I'm going to frame a picture of Lucy, our golden retriever, too. Some cute ideas, Leslie. Thanks... Oh, I'm really getting nervous!
Exciting times!! LOVE the desk makeover Leslie!
I have been thinking of you and wondered if you have bought out Kleenex yet! These are great tips Leslie ~ when is the "big day"? xo
Love the top photo. Funny, I had an Ivy League boyfriend years ago and remember scenes like this. Very strange for a young Australian student living in a messy student house in downtown Sydney, working three jobs to save up to go to Europe! Xcat
My roommate and I had so much fun decorating our dorm. We even talked before we moved in to so could coordinate together. We ended up getting the same exact college dorm bed sheets and lamps. It didn't look like 2 completely different people lived there. It was a great experience.
