“Mom….where are the chairs?!”

IMG_2717 - Copy

Yep. This is my latest project. My kitchen chairs and table. Today is “peek day” at Gwen Moss.

If you’ve been around awhile, you know there’s always something I’m working on around here. Right now I’m still in the process of lightening up my great room.

My kitchen

First I gave the family room bricks a makeover and now comes my kitchen. See the black table and black chairs? Well, they’re in the process of being transformed by white chalk paint as I write this post.

But I rarely announce my plans to my family and sometimes it’s funny how the men in my life handle it. Mostly they’re just oblivious.

Seriously. Patrick actually came home from college and didn’t even notice that I’d repainted the brick fireplace.

I mean… how do you not see this?

Which gives you an idea of the type of men I live with. Let’s just say when it comes to decorating, they’re not the most astute observers of the changes that go on around here…

Except when it comes to chairs.

The other day Michael came home from Crew practice and even though I was in the garage busy sanding the thick black veneer off my chairs, I could hear him calling  me….

“MOOOOOOMMMMMM…where are the chairs?”

I had to laugh.

Apparently he was all ready to eat when he happened to notice there wasn’t a chair in sight. At least at the kitchen island which is the prime real estate location in our home because, well… it’s near the TV.

Here’s a peek at the chairs so far. For this paint job I made my own chalk paint (to save money)using Plaster of Paris and it’s going on well. Although I’ve read some negative reviews about Plaster of Paris, I decided to use this blogger’s review as a guide.

No seats yet, sorry Mike.

I still need to add another coat of wax on the table but I’m loving the change.

After the first coat of white paint I pulled the chair up to the island to get an idea of the new look.

And here’s a peek at my other kitchen project. Yep, it’s a chalkboard, can you guess where it’s going?

Don’t forget to check back for my big reveal. Hopefully by then I’ll have my camera problems worked out. These are all photos from my cell phone. Somehow I’ve messed up my settings on my Nikon D90 while I was trying to practice taking pictures from the manual setting.

Now my “auto” setting isn’t focusing like before.

Sigh. Just another day in the life of a blogger, right?

Patrick’s coming home for a visit this weekend which means the family’s together again…

which means I’m so happy!

  3. You certainly have a challenge with this I think... So far, looks great! I'm sure all the sanding is not fun. At least it wouldn't be for me. :)

  4. The white is looking good! That's hilarious that your son didn't notice the fireplace. Now, if you had moved the TV or something, he probably would have noticed THAT! Have a great weekend. We're going to try to get some yard work done this weekend, if the weather cooperates.

  11. I love that you put the chairs back without the seats - definitely something I would do. All of your "lightening" is going great.

This weekend is going to be a whirlwind - my team's first volleyball tournament of the spring season - the top 6th grade girls' team all day tomorrow. But, the best is the LA Marathon. Both of my kids are in town to run. I will drive them in to LA at 5:00 a.m. and drive back home for breakfast with the hubs. Then we will both go in at noon to pick them up and head to Manhattan Beach for a fav Mexican restaurant before dropping our daughter off at LAX. Last time they did a marathon together she beat him by 1 full hour so he is out to get her.

  18. We're on the same wave-length, sort of. I've been re-doing my kitchen chairs/table, as well, but I'm going dark. Not sure I'm going to like it, but I've had this old set at least 20 years, so if I don't like the results, I'm headed to the furniture store.

    I love the white!

  19. I could hardly scroll past the first photo of your kitchen, I love your cabinets!!! Your whole kitchen is just lovely and it will be even better with your chair makeover. Can't wait to see the results! And the men in your family are just too funny. Not noticing the painted brick ... oh my goodness! ... Hope you are enjoying a wonderful family weekend!

  21. Love the change and I have three sons so I know where you're coming from. I'm almost ready to paint the kitchen a light mint green - it's taken me four years to decide on the colour. This weekend I skied and drank beer and woke up with three young hard rockers sleeping in the kitchen.. Ah life!
